Oregon Military Department: Nesmith Readiness Center
Challenge
Built in 2014, the LEED-certified Nesmith Readiness Center’s initial build-out included a small, grid-connected solar-electric system and generator. Sunlight Solar, an Oregon based EPC, reached out to Mayfield Renewables to support expanding the system to enable the facility to be a community resiliency site with 14 days of backup. The intention was to provide a community space for emergency response to the anticipated earthquake event in the Pacific NW region’s Cascadia subduction zone.

Solution
Mayfield conducted a thorough microgrid feasibility study including gathering detailed load data on the site, running simulations predicting how much diesel fuel would be consumed during the various outage scenarios and given the existing 255kW solar array and backup generator. After monitoring and analysis of the load data, Mayfield vetted product solutions, liaised with various stakeholders and manufacturers, provided full system engineering, as well as oversight upon commissioning to ensure setup and installation aligned with the plan.
Result
For decades to come, this resiliency upgrade provides at once a safe harbor, operational cost savings, a clean energy showcase, and an environmental education tool for the valued community with which the Nesmith Readiness Center is shared.

Elemental Energy has had a long-standing relationship with Mayfield Renewables over the years as a fellow Oregon-based company. While Mayfield supports Elemental with direct design services for some of their commercial projects, the consulting retainer service provides ongoing support to their internal sales, design, and project management teams.
